The Elder Service Connections initiative is an intervention research project. Funding for the 3-year project was received by the State of Maine's Office of Aging and Disability Services' Adult Protective Services (APS) from the U.S. HHS Administration on Community Living.

The project seeks to develop an evidence-based practice to support individuals experiencing elder mistreatment and to address a gap in

services for older victims.

  • Clients are referred to the program directly by Adult Protective Services.

  • Advocates provide advocacy and tailored support to clients after their case is closed with APS.

  • Advocates are employed by the Elder Abuse Institute of Maine, who is a subcontractor to the State.

  • Clients must be 60 years old or older and at risk of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and/or self-neglect to work with Advocates.

  • All clients are voluntary and have the right to refuse Advocate services.

  • Advocates serve Cumberland and Aroostook counties. These two regions were chosen by random sampling as part of the research methodology.

  • If the client chooses, Advocates can work with the family unit.  Advocates will work from a restorative practice framework.

  • Advocates work with the frameworks of Motivational Interviewing, Teaming, Supportive Decision Making and Restorative Practices.  All of our work comes from a client-centered perspective.
